In 2019, the New York Times Magazine shook the world with the groundbreaking "1619 Project," an undertaking birthed from the mind of esteemed journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones. It sought to carefully explain the role of slavery and Black Americans in shaping the foundations of the United States.

Social Strategy

I collaborated with a team to formulate an all-encompassing social strategy for the rollout of the 1619 Project. Ensuring a presence across all pertinent platforms, we coordinated across various departments to facilitate shares on the social media accounts of other New York Times verticals.

In addition to contributing to platform strategy, I orchestrated the social media live stream of the 1619 Project launch event and special symposium at the National Museum of African American History, enhancing the project's visibility and engagement on a broader scale.

UGC & Cultural Expertise

I spearheaded the effort to compile a roster of key personalities to contact before the publication date, reaching out to luminaries such as Oprah, Ava Duvernay, and the Obamas. I sent copies of the magazine to each individual, culminating in an extraordinary publishing day marked by widespread acclaim from some of the most influential voices in the Black community.

Drawing upon my extensive understanding of issues impacting cultural groups, with a particular focus on the Black community in the United States, I pitched and developed user-generated content pieces. These pieces delved into pertinent themes derived from the legacy of slavery. They address topics such as the way the history of slavery is taught in schools and the narratives of enslaved ancestors that fortunate individuals have managed to uncover and preserve within their family histories. These pieces complemented the ongoing dissemination of the 1619 Project.
